What the Paint Project Budget Calculator actually calculates
Finish paint, primer, supplies, and labor are added, then the same tax percentage is applied to the entire subtotal. This is a cost-summing tool rather than a quantity estimator. It does not calculate cans, coverage, preparation hours, contingency, or differing tax treatment for labor and materials.
The calculation path
All direct costs are summed and tax is applied to the subtotal.
Inputs that can change the answer
- Finish paint: Enter finish paint as a number; use the definition in the calculation method.
- Primer: Enter primer as a number; use the definition in the calculation method.
- Supplies: Enter supplies in the selected currency; keep tax and included work consistent.
- Labor: Enter labor in the selected currency; keep tax and included work consistent.
- Tax: Percentage applied at the stage shown in the method; enter 10 for ten percent.
- Currency: Label for all entered prices; no currency conversion is performed.
Checks that stay outside the formula
Include surface repair and furniture moving when comparing contractor estimates.
A practical order for entering the data
- Price finish paint and primer from their separately estimated quantities.
- Enter supply costs and the complete labor estimate, including agreed preparation work.
- Set tax on a consistent pre-tax basis and review the project subtotal and total.
Engine check using the prefilled sample
Budget example: finish paint = 260, primer = 90, supplies = 75, labor = 600, tax = 8 % and currency = USD ($). Swap these demonstration amounts for current figures from the project before using the total as a budget.
Results for these inputs
- Project subtotal
- 1,025.00 USD
- Estimated total
- 1,107.00 USD
