Furniture Tools

Choose furniture dimensions and maintain comfortable movement clearances.

Project planning guide

Check furniture size together with circulation and use space

A furniture dimension can fit inside a room and still create a poor layout. Seating, dining, storage, and beds need space to approach, open, pull out, or walk around. The useful question is not only “does it fit?” but “does it work in the positions where people use it?”

Use exact product dimensions when available, including handles, arms, legs, and opened doors or drawers. Mark the footprint on the floor and compare the remaining routes before committing to a large purchase.

Before you calculate or buy

  • Record the product width, depth, height, and any opened or reclined dimensions.
  • Measure the intended wall or zone and the narrowest delivery route.
  • Keep main walkways and door swings visible on the plan.
  • Check pull-out chairs, drawers, wardrobe doors, and recliners in their used position.
  • Use floor tape or a paper footprint to test scale before buying.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Checking only the closed furniture dimensions.
  • Using room area instead of the exact wall and circulation dimensions.
  • Ignoring skirting, sockets, radiators, window sills, and floor vents.
  • Assuming a mathematically equal spacing arrangement is automatically comfortable.
